출발...

드디어 출발이다.
들뜬 마음에 잠을 설치다가 글을 적기 시작한다.

아무 것도 되어진것이 없다. 이제부터 시작이다.
하지만, 우리는 벌서 후반전을 마치고 탈진해 버린 선수들 마냥 힘겨운 발을 이끌고...
출발점에 발을 올려 놓고 있는 것 같다.

지난 금요일 TGIF...
뿔뿔히 흩어져 앉은 우리들의 모습을 보면서
그 때 그 그렇게 뿔뿔히 흩어져 있던 모습이 현재 우리의 모습이 아닐까 생각했다.
육체도 지치고, 마음도 지쳐... 이젠 더 이상이 화합도 되지 않는...

하지만....
이제 돌아 갈 길은 없다. 이제 되돌아 갈 수도 없다.
지난 번, Death Valley에서는 되돌아 올 수 있었을 지 모르지만... 그 건 연습이였다.
돌아갈 수 없다면 앞으로 가는 것이다. 앞에 무엇이 있는 지 모르지만,
한 가지 확실한 것은 이 것은 그 분이 하시는 일이다.


출발,아무리 흩어져 있어도, 아무리 지쳐 있어도, 아무리 힘들더라도 ,
출발,이런 우리의 모습도 그분 안에서 그분의 합당하신 뜻대로 쓰여질 것을 믿고..
출발, 그 분이 우리와 함께 달리시는 것을 믿고...

To Life Valley

지난 밤 누울 자리도 없이 욱이형 소파에서 잔게 서러워선지 아침 새벽부터 입을 삐쭉거리며 있었다. 어쩜, 그 것보다 처음으로 가지는 2009 감비아선교팀 Lock in...다들 피곤하다고 빨리 자버리고..팀원들이랑 이야기도 제대로 못한 채허탈하게 게임도 안하고 먼가 허전하다고 실망하는 마음이 컸는 지도 모른다.

그래도 나 혼자 설레이는 마음을 주체 못해서Death Valley로 이 말도 안 되는 이상한 여행을 머리 속으로 그리며 거의 밤을 세웠다. 모두가 예상 했던 거지만, 출발 예정 시간 다섯시보다 한시간 반 지나서야 출발했다. 하지만, 오랜만에 맡아보는 아침 이슬과 어딘가로 떠난다는 설레이는 마음에 모든 사람들이 들떠 있는 것처럼 보였다.

Death Valley… 예상소유시간은 다섯시간...

우리는 거기에 뭐가 있는 지도 모른채,단지, 바람에 밀려 움직이는 신기한 돌이 있다는 욱이형 말에 반신반의하며 그래도 달리기 시작한다.

그리고 켈리의 저 높은 산들과 그 산을 덮어 놓은 듯한 구름.

끝 없이 펼쳐져 있는 장관들을 만끽하면서 그 장관과도 너무나 멋쩍게 어울리는 음악과 그리고 서부영화~ Feel 가게에서의 푸짐한 아침식사...

그렇게 우리는 영화 "델마와 루이스" 한 장면을 그리는 배우들이냥 달콤한 꿈에 빠져 든다.

곧 우리에게 무슨 일이 벌어질지 생각도 못한 채......

끝없는… 정말 끝이 없는 도로를 달린 지 5시간…

이상한 나라의 앨리스가 된 듯한 이상한 풍경들..생전 처음 보는 신기하고 진기한 나무들과 그 어떤 위대한 조각가도 흉내지 못할 절경들이 이어지면서우리는 곧 Death valley에 도착한 줄 알았다. 적어도 나는 그렇게 생각했었다.

하지만, 5마일만 더… 5마일만 더… 5마일만 더…더 이상은 우리는 인적이나 다른 차들을 볼 수 없는 더 이상은 Family Van이 달릴 수 없는 비포장도로를 달리고 있었다.. 아니, 차에서 내려 걷고 있었다.우리는 겉으로 웃고 있었지만, 검은 그림자가 서서히 찾아오고 있었다.뭔가 잘못 되고 있다는 불길한 느낌..

계속 되는 5마일, 그리고 5마일, 그리고 또 5마일...곧 도로는 더 이상 도로가 아니였다.팀원들은 더 이상 웃지 않았다.조금이라도 앞으로 나아가기 위해 커다란 돌을 치우고,때론 돌을 쌓아 길을 만들어야 하는 곳도 있었다.하지만, 우리는 앞으로 나아갔다. 돌아갈 생각은 하지 않았다. 우리가 돌아가기엔 이미 늦었다고 생각했다. 우리가 이렇게 고생해서 정복 할려고 하는 저 Death valley의 정상이 바로 저 앞이라고 생각했다.

하지만, 바퀴가 헛돌고, 수십 feet아래로 차가 떨어지는 듯한 위험한 순간들을 몇 번이나 넘기고 저기가 마지막 고개겠지…하며 바라봤다.

그 고개를 바라보던 순간 주님께 묻기 시작했다. “주님… 왜 우리가 이 곳을 올라 가는 건가요?”

우리는 서로 손을 잡고 기도하기 시작했다.우리를 지켜달라고,이 곳을 안전하게 지나가게 해달라고 이 곳을 넘어 주님이 예비하신 땅을 들어가게 해달라고….

기도를 마치고, 다시 5마일. 아니, 5 미터를 지나던 순간, 우리는 깨닫는 다.

주님은 우리가 Death valley에 가는 것을 원하셨던 것이 아니다.

아무리 우리가 어떠한 목표를 정하고 그 곳에 도달하려고 한다고 해도우리의 욕심이고, 우리의 계획에 지나지 않는다.

우리의 목표는 Death Valley였다. 하지만, 주님의 목표는 우리팀이 하나됨이셨다.

하나님은 우리 감비아팀에게 Death Valley라는 결과보다 그 곳에 향하던 중에우리가 땀 흘리고, 서로 격려하고, 서로를 위해 기도하게 하셔서열 명의 개인이 아닌, 하나의 공동체가 되게 하려 하셨던 것이다.

우리는 Death Valley에서 하나님의 철저한 계획하심을 느끼고 그 분의 위대하심을 목격했다.

그리고, 이번 여름 우리는 감비아 땅에서 Death Valley에서 역사하셨던 동일하신 하나님이,

그 분이 준비 하신 모든 계획이 이루어지고 그분의 위대하심을 다시 목격할 것을 확신했다.

Lock-In

We had a lock-in last night. We were all tired and worn out from the day, most having endured a long day of work and an evening of bible study. We met at midnight and had a fruitful meeting until about 1:30 A.M. We then worked on VBS material long into the night.
As we were working, it struck me how curious the picture may seem to the outside world. Here we were, a group of relative strangers (at least with respect to me) at the house of another stranger some of us have never met before, making bubble wands and cutting out giant foam keys for kids 5,000 miles away whose names we don’t even know yet; at 3 in the morning despite working all day and suffering from sleep deprivation. Strange and curious indeed, upon thought.

In fact, all this would be absolutely insane and crazy if Jesus turns out to be false. No one in their right minds would sacrifice their time, energy, and money if they didn’t think there was something more valuable, more important than their sacrifice. No one in their right minds would spend their Friday evening punishing their bodies with work when they could be pursuing other pleasures, if they didn’t think their sacrifice gave them something greater in return. But we are a bunch who have faith and believe in our hearts that Jesus is who He says He is. We are here learning to give up our lives because we, like Peter, have confessed Jesus to be the Christ, the Son of the living God. Because we believe in the reality of Jesus, we do what otherwise is only madness; and because we have believed and have come to know the Christ, we gladly join together in love though stranger we be, to declare the reign of our Lord, Jesus Christ. What a privilege it is to be serving the Lord! Ok…got to go and make more of those keys…

A Little Bit About Gambia

Gambia is the smallest country in West Africa. It is enveloped by Senegal, and its western border meets the Atlantic Coast. Its most prominent landscape feature is the Gambia River that runs across the country. Poverty is prevalent in Gambia, as roughly 1 in 3 Gambians live below the poverty line of earning 1.25 dollars a day. Its capital is Banjul.

Gambia’s history can be traced all the way back to at least 470 B.C. Beginning in the 15^th century, Gambian history is filled with foreign settlers’ dominance and colonization. The Portuguese, French, and Britain all had their turns occupying Gambia, exploiting the Gambia River for boat travel. Because of the vast Saharan desert to the east, Gambia and its natural resources were a vital stretch of land for European colonizers and explorers. Imprints of colonization by the British are evident today: English is Gambia’s official language. Gambia gained independence in 1965.

Despite the long time under colonial rule, Gambia was able to maintain its diverse cultural and ethnic identity. Gambians live under the tribal system; the Mandinka tribe is the largest, followed by the Fula, Wolof, Jola, and Serahule. It is said that Gambia is known for their unique food, dress, and music. Our team is eager to learn about the Gambian way of life during our stay there. Can’t wait!

Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna

Polycarp. Wow. This guy was THE MAN. But his name is kind of weird. Reminds me of a Pokemon, Magicarp…anyway, Polycarp was the Bishop of Smyrna, a city in modern Turkey. There was a wave of Christian persecution with the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the first century, and fate would have it that Polycarp was arrested. Of course, Polycarp had done nothing wrong; in fact, all he did was good and holy, often being the peacemaker in matters of dispute in the church. But the persecutors didn’t care for any of this, and they captured Polycarp when he was 90 to burn him at the stake. After suffering humiliating treatment by his captors, he was led into an amphitheatre and burned alive in AD 166 for refusing to sacrifice to heathen gods. When given the chance to renounce his faith and live, this is what Polycarp had to say: "Fourscore and six years have I served Christ, and He hath never done me wrong; how then can I now blaspheme my King and Savior?" Beautiful, isn’t it?

There is so much work to be done. When we look around our world, there is an immense amount of suffering and pain. Sin and evil are rampant, even in our churches. Injustice is everywhere. People are hurting and lonely, spiritually dead and needy. The picture is profoundly bleak and depressing. For such an impossible circumstance such as this, it’s really a wonder how God expects us to do anything about it. But indeed, He doesn’t. He doesn’t expect us to fix anything, because He knows more than anyone else how deeply incompetent we are. That’s why He sent a Savior – the only Savior for the whole world. Our part is only that of a faithful messenger, just simply obeying His Spirit’s movement within us each day, remembering that true salvation for this life and the next belongs only to God. And when we obey, His light will shine through us and become for a darkened world a bright ray of hope, as Jesus once became the light and hope to each one of us. May God use us during this mission to Gambia and bring many to the joyous knowledge of Jesus Christ! :)

I love the vision of God of redemption and restoration that began with Jesus 2,000 years ago in the desert sands of Palestine. The kingdom of God is a world where the reign of sin and its deadly effects will have ceased. It is a kingdom in which the specter of our fears and worries will pursue us no more, a kingdom where God Himself will have redeemed and restored completely broken humanity. It means rest, peace, and unspeakable joy and gladness, and God has promised in Jesus Christ that this kingdom will surely be established one day soon. But until that day comes, there is a bold proclamation that needs to be made here on earth. We His people have been called not to an idle waiting for the Kingdom, but to be active participants through whom His kingdom will come. We are people with a foretaste of all the glory that is come, entrusted with the solemn but joyous responsibility of declaring the good news that God is at work even today and the troubles of all those who trust in His name will come gloriously to an end soon.

Gambia Mission - less than 3 weeks left

It has been four years since I've visited Gambia back in 2oo5 for the first time from our church. Since then, every year people from church went there to spread Gospel and meet children of Gambia for HIS cause. When time came for mission season, I always had Gambia in my heart. Although I loved the mission experience in Amazon back in 2006 and had so much blessings from missionary Dong-Sil Park, Gambia never left my heart. There is something about Gambia that draws my heart. I know why this is happening to me, and I can say why in a simple statement...

I'm going back there this year and my heart is so excited about the mission that I have a hard time focusing on my work. But I know in my heart that it's all good... He knows what my next step is.

There are 10 members for Gambia mission team this year and we are all exited to go there and do God's work. Three times a week, we get together and practice and practice for children in Gambia.

VBS Plans

Hey~ guys~
I worked on the VBS planning today. It's just a first draft. Hope you guys take a look at it and fill in the blanks. ^-^ I'll try to make samples of crafts next week. I don't think I'll have time tomorrow. Hope you guys are having a wonderful day!
Oh! and to update on Visa application, I contacted the JSN from the East Coast today. I'm gonna call the NY embassy ppl tomorrow. It seems that we won't get a price discount. I'll try to push for 5yr visa. But No Guarantees!! ^^:;; Pray for visa processing, please.

A Sucky Day

Today was a tiring day. I didn’t do much, but it was tiring anyway. Well, I studied, but that’s about it. And I watched the Lakers game in the evening, which, sadly, the Lakers won.
There was no peace in me today. Given that all I did today was sit at home and read basically, I guess you might wonder what there was to not feel peaceful about. Yeah, I’m puzzled too. Just one of those awkward days where I couldn’t quite pinpoint what was wrong.
That’s was my day. Where was God in all this? I don’t know yet. Where is He now? Good question. I’m gonna go pray and see. I hope you had a better day than me.

'드러내려 하지 않고는 숨긴 것이 없고 나타내려 하지 않고는 감추인 것이 없느니라'

내 안에 계신 예수 그리스도의 빛을 나는 드러 내어야 한다. 그 빛은 감추거나 숨기라고 주신 빛이 아니라 등경위에 올려진 빛처럼 주위를 밝게 비취라고 주신 것이다. 우리는 예수 그리스도의 빛이 밝게 드러나지 못하게 하는 그 어떠한 장애물도 허락지 말아야 한다 (씨뿌리는 자의 비유). 그러므로 이것은 천국의 확장성과도 연결이 되는데 30배 60배 100배의 결실을 맺는다는 것이 빛되신 예수 그리스도의 확장 - 다시말해서 주님이 계신곳, 즉 천국의 확장과 더불어 '너는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라' 하신 말씀의 실천이라 하겠다.

예수님께 완전히 초점이 맞춰진 삶은 생각도 행동도 그 삶의 방향도 목표도 처음부터 끝까지 예수님 중심이다. 내 안에 계신 하나님이 나에게 어떤 분이신가에 따라 나의 생각과 성격이 바뀌고 거기에 맞춰 행동이 바뀌고 계획이 바뀌고 인생이 바뀌게 되는 것이다. 그러므로 하나님이, 예수님이, 성령님이 나를 어떤 모습으로 만나 주시는가를 아는것이 무척 중요하다. 나에게 보여주시는 그분의 성격과 모습이 바로 나의 성격과 모습이 되기 때문에 그렇다.

사랑, 능력, 거룩, 지혜, 전쟁, 분노, 자비, 고귀하심, 독특하심, 배려, 교양 있으심, 섬세함, 멋지심, 뜬금 없으심, 놀래키기 좋아하심, 적극적, 질투(엄청많으심), 인격적이심(나를 너무 존중해 주시는게 어떤때는 싫다:), 살짝 귀여우실 때도 있으심!!! :) (정말 깜짝 놀랬음ㅋㅋ), 그리고 사랑 사랑 사랑...더 은밀한 것은 하나님과 나만의 비밀이라 밝히지 못하겠다. ㅋ

뭐 어쨌든 결론은...
난 복의 근원이다.

13만 니느웨 성 사람들을 돌아보신 하나님께선 180만 감비아를 반드시 생각하고 계신다. 니느웨성에 한개의 축복이 임했다면 감비아를 위해선 10배의 축복이 임해야 한다고 믿는다. 감비아는 아프리카에서 가장 작은 나라에 속하지만 가장 작지 아니한 나라가 될 것이고 가장 척박한 땅에 속하지만 가장 척박하지 않은 나라가 될 것이다. 하나님께선 가장 작은 감비아를 통해서 아프리카를 변화 시키실 것이다. 감비아가 마치 다이너마이트의 뇌관과 같은 역할로 아프리카 예수 폭발의 시발점이 될 것이다. 아멘.

감비아 선교팀 기도 제목 #1

1. 선교 팀원들이 감비아 땅을 가슴에 품을수 있도록

2. 선교사님들의 모든 사역과 삶을 하나님이 보호하여 주시도록, 특별히 이슬람문화권에 눌리지 않도록

3. 감비아 현지인 사역자들이 세워질수있도록
